Q.How many summer associates do you anticipate hiring for the 2008 summer program?
A.We anticipate hiring two first-year summer associates. We also anticipate hiring three to five second-year summer associates.
Q.How are work assignments distributed to summer associates and what process is followed regarding feedback?
A.Summer associates can expect to work on a wide variety of litigation and transactional matters. In addition, we strive to expose summer associates to each area of the law in which he or she is interested. However, summer associate projects are largely dependent on the cases on which attorneys in the firm are working at the time. Work assignments are distributed by individual attorneys and are reviewed weekly by the Hiring Committee.

Each summer associate receives constructive feedback on his or her work directly from the attorneys with whom he or she works and from an assigned host or mentor. In addition, summer associates receive mid-summer and end-of-summer evaluations from the Shareholder in charge of Recruiting. The firm's goal is to enable summer associates to experience how it is to practice law as an associate at Kirton & McConkie. To this end, summer associates are encouraged to cultivate working relationships directly with the attorneys in their practice groups of interest. These relationships frequently provide the basis of the summer associate's full-time practice when he or she returns to the firm after graduation from law school.

Q.What types of experiences are available for summer associates?
A.The firm is committed to ensuring that our summer associates have the opportunity to experience trials, hearings, depositions, negotiations, client counseling, witness interviews, closings, legislative work, and other events representative of the firm's practice, in addition to researching and writing.
Q.Will the summer associates have mentors?
A.Yes. Each summer associate is paired with an attorney host/mentor. Hosts are "sounding boards," responsible for providing advice and feedback on work assignments, answering questions regarding any aspect of working within the firm, and generally making sure that the summer associate's time at Kirton & McConkie is rewarding, as well as fun. Summer associates are encouraged to develop working relationships directly with the attorneys in the practice areas in which the summer associates are most interested.

Q.Are resumes welcome from students attending law schools other than those law schools where on-campus interviews are held?
A.Of course. Please forward your resume, law school transcript, and writing sample to Thomas D. Walk, Kirton & McConkie, 60 East South Temple, Suite 1800, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111.
Q.Are summer associates permitted to split the summer?
A.We find that summer associates who split their summers are usually at a disadvantage at the end of the summer in terms of where they stand among the other summer associates. This often negatively affects the split-Summer Associate's chances of receiving an offer. For these reasons, the firm discourages split summers. Under certain circumstances, the firm permits splitting summers but requires a minimum of six weeks' work time.

Q.What activities outside of work are planned?
A.We strive to provide summer associates with the opportunity to get to know firm shareholders and associates outside the context of client work. Activities typically include parties for attorneys and summer associates held at the homes of firm attorneys, summer concerts and plays, mountain adventures, as well as outings at professional baseball games and recreation centers.
