Mr. Steed is a member of the firm's Tax and International practice sections. His practice emphasizes a combination of tax, legal and financial strategies for both domestic and foreign clients.
Mr. Steed advises an exclusive private clientele in regard to their private investments, businesses, estates, trusts, and charities. Mr. Steed’s clientele includes public company executives, entrepreneurs, principals of global private equity and investment capital funds, professional athletes, actors, entertainers, musicians, artists, authors, members of the medical and legal communities, and other prominent individuals and their families in all aspects.
He is licensed before the United States Tax Court and also assists his clients in tax controversy matters whenever appropriate, including voluntary disclosure proceedings involving foreign assets. He has participated as an expert witness in estate and trust controversy cases – including matters involving foreign trusts and trusts for foreign persons.
In serving high profile clients, Mr. Steed is also involved in sophisticated planning for enterprise and charity -- including all aspects of entity formation, capitalization, planning, structure, and governance. He serves as general counsel and sits on boards of directors for large for-profit and nonprofit organizations. He represents several public companies in both the tech and financial services industry. Mr. Steed also represents prominent financial institutions, investment companies/trusts and public charities having a global presence. He has served over the years in various capacities with the Utah State Bar, including as past chairman of the Section on Nonprofit Organizations. He is actively involved with development and planned giving offices for large universities, religious institutions, and other global nonprofits.
Mr. Steed is a frequent speaker on topics involving areas of cross-border finance, private enterprise, estates, trusts, asset protection, nonprofits, foreign investment, and multi-jurisdictional practice. He has published numerous articles on these subjects. He has been recognized as one of Utah's Legal Elite for estate planning and non-profit and as a Mountain States Super Lawyer for estate planning and taxation. Utah Business Magazine also named him one of Utah’s top forty business professionals under the age of 40.
Mr. Steed is an adjunct law professor at the University of Utah, S.J. Quinney College of Law. He is an active member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). He is certified Trusts and Estates Practitioner (TEP).
